Description of Organisation

The Emilia-Romagna Region with a population of 4,4 mill. inhabitants (7% of Italy), has a GDP of 141 bill Euro (GDP per Capita Index: 127). The industrial system is based on 382.186 small and medium companies. The research infrastructure is made out of: 

·         6 Universities (11 locations): Bologna, Ferrara, Modena and Reggio Emilia, Parma, Piacenza

·         Over 150,000 students  (8,3% of national total amount)

·         23,100 full time researcher/scientists

Main Research Centers highly specialised (including main branches of National Research Institutes and specialised centres) are: 

CNR - National Research Council (16 institutions), ENEA - Italian National agency for new technologies, Energy and sustainable economic development (4 centers), INFM -  National Institute for Material Physics , IASF – Italian national institute for astrophysics, INGV – National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, CINECA - the largest Italian computing centre, IOR – Orthopedic Institute Rizzoli, CNIT - the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, SSICA – Preserves’  Experimental Centre in Parma, CMR - Regenerative Medicine Center “Stefano Ferrari”. 

ASTER is the Consortium, including Emilia-Romagna regional administration, for industrial research, technology transfer and innovation, aimed at promoting technological innovation in industry, creating link between researchers and enterprises and identifying the great frontiers of science which will influence future economy and on which business and research can work and invest together.
