Europe’s energy market is undergoing a fundamental transition from a system based on fossil fuels and nuclear power towards one based entirely on renewable energy (Energy Market 2.0). This is changing the European energy market and transforming from a centralized market dominated by large utilities to a decentralized market with millions of active energy citizens or “prosumers”. But citizens in our cities, and in the NSR area as well, are not fully benefitting from the ongoing energy transition. The local authorities are responsible for ensuring that the transition runs smoothly for the cititzens. The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA), as many EU urban regions has the ambition to be climate neutral in 2040. But developments go relatively slowly because of a lack of replicable and scalable solutions. Within this project we will test and demonstrate how the right size and scale of cooperation can be achieved, and how a direct access to the energy market can easily be obtained by empowering the citizens. The challenge lies in integrating governance, economic and financial, technical and community approaches. This project takes actions to increase energy awareness and improve the sustainable behaviour of European citizens and move towards an European Energy market 2.0.
- This project will encourage and allow (all) citizens to produce, store and use their own energy from renewable energy sources either individually or with others in community energy initiatives. This project will protect the most vulnerable consumers (inclusive energy market). We enable energy initiatives by cities and the communities to jointly own and exploit local energy.
- Thereby this project focuses on 4 coherence workpackages to develop and test solutions for; legal and organizational, financial (Business case), technical (ICT) and community (communication tools and networks) parts of this new energy market. The project innovativeness is not in separate elements but in combining and replicating them in different pilot areas and in developing a Prosumer Energy Platform for replication and upscaling. This project will reach 40.000 households in its runtime in all pilot areas, these areas are representative for NSR.
