SiTI – Istituto Superiore sui Sistemi Territoriali per l’Innovazione (Higher Institute on Territorial Systems for Innovation) is a no profit association set up in 2002 between the Politecnico di Torino and the Compagnia di San Paolo, to carry out research and training oriented towards innovation and socio-economic growth.
SiTI is a permanent organization of the Compagnia di San Paolo, with a strong interdisciplinary approach, specifically devoted to territorial systems. It aims at solving complex problems through an integration of the expertise available at the Politecnico, and by linking it with other high level research centers. Its activities are focused on the following sectors: Logistics and transport, Environmental heritage and urban redevelopment, Environmental protection.
Development of simulation models and system analysis are the main activities carried out by this Research Unit to study the transport systems – at different territorial scales – and provide plans, strategies and actions aimed at easing people’s mobility and rationalizing freight transport, meeting society’s environmental, social and economic needs whilst minimizing transport undesirable impacts. Services offered range from infrastructure and transport specialized studies to innovative and multidisciplinary applications.
The research activities regard urban planning, conservation, defence of the natural and cultural components of the environmental systems and urban redevelopment.
SiTI carries out research activities in the field of urban competitiveness and real estate appraisal; research and support activities in the field of Social Housing policies and measures oriented to sustainable buildings and communities (main drivers: energy, environment, social and economic variables); management and valorisation of Private and Public Real Estate Assets. Study activities are carried out for the proposals of candidacy of UNESCO sites, the preparation of management plans. SiTI has developed an in-depth knowledge in the field of tourism management.
This Unit carries out research on security and safety of critical infrastructures, with special focus on security assessment and cascading effects, and cultural heritage
Furthermore, SiTI has developed a distinctive know how in the field of smart energy for smart cities and communities, based upon an experimental approach combining technology and innovative business models.
SiTI develops and carries out projects both financed by national and international institutions. SiTI works in cooperation with researchers of Politecnico di Torino, the Universities and other research centres in Italy and in Europe and usually implements projects in partnership with national, regional and local public administrations. SiTI has a large experience in European research and cooperation projects as project partner and in some international tenders as leader.
The "International Cooperation" Unit pursues the objective to facilitate the participation of the Institute in applied research projects within the wide framework of the intervention policies about territorial systems at European, national and local level. The sector deals with identifying funding opportunities which aim at promoting competitiveness, innovation, accessibility, territorial sustainable development and heritage valorization. It looks after the creation of qualified partnerships, involving relevant international institutions working on research and territorial development, and on the preparation of project proposals. It coordinates the management of funded projects by monitoring the progress of activities, ensuring the achievement of the objectives.
The SiTI team is composed by heads of Unit and researchers having different backgrounds and knowledge, such as experts of urban and land planning, environmental management, environmental impact assessment, geo-visualization, tourism management, cultural heritage, social housing, safety and security and energy.
SiTI facilities are located within the campus of the Politecnico di Torino – Italy. SiTI is certified UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 standards and ensures an efficient quality system for each assignment.
