Meet, taste and experience Top of Holland and the European Capital of Culture Leeuwarden/Friesland 2018, during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussel
1.1 – EAT: Food
With several festivals (Welcome to The Village in Leeuwarden) and the Potato Festival (Groningen), and the Hanze University, an artistic Potato Lab is being developed, with Culture and Food. The results will be showcased and complemented with other food innovations that are typical for the Top of Holland region, such as ‘saline cultivation’ vegetables and cattail beer.
1.2 – MEET: Debate
We offer a debate programme with paneuropean ánd typical regional issues, not only urgent and challenging for politicians, but also for a broad audience. It will address some of the 2018-projects that aim at social innovations through culture, and will also show how We The North, the regional cultural cooperation of three provinces, contribute to this. Examples are Veenhuizen (a former prisoner compound), the Innofest project (innovation through festivals as temporary living labs), Paradigm050 (a partnership of music lovers, artists, students and entrepreneurs) et cetera. The EC-funded study Culture for Cities and Regions will be finished in September and will be used for the debate programme (themes: culture and the creative industries for local economic development and urban regeneration; cultural heritage as a driver for economic growth and social inclusion; culture for social inclusion, social innovation and intercultural dialogue).
1.3 – ENJOY: performing arts
Performing arts acts have a double role: while entertaining they will showcase our 2018-mission. Meanwhile, some top notch acts from the northern region will be presented to an audience including scouts and programme makers from Belgium.
Sneak preview: a performance by the dynamic, daring, humorous youngsters from Club Guy & Roni (Poetic Disasters) and a concert of Sytze Pruiksma with Spinoza Prize winner Theunis Piersma, professor of Global Flyway Ecology and Wadden Sea biologist. The latter are involved in a LF2018 project on biodiversity: King of the Meadows.
1.4 - Experience
The venue will offer a surprising experience, that supports the evening’s programme. Not only images from the 2018 programme, but also the Top Dutch cultural icons will be displayed, plus presentations of the major expositions that the main museums of arts will house in 2018. Escher - Fries Museum, Americana - Drents Museum, Northeuropean romanticism - Groninger museum.
