Green Week partner event: A joined-up approach to managing the water environment – a research perspective
The James Hutton Institute is the premier interdisciplinary scientific research institute in Scotland, combining expertise in agricultural research, soils and land use, and works in fields including water management, food and energy security, biodiversity, and climate change.
The next instalment of our 'Environmental Leaders' Scotland House discussion series will be delivered by James Hutton Institute as part of EU Green Week, highlighting the Scottish research perspective on protecting our natural capital.
Dr Richard Allan, Business Sector Lead for Environment and Dr Kerry Waylen, Senior Researcher in Natural Resource Management will present JHI's research experience on a wide range of topics in relation to Scotland's natural capital, highlighting the Scottish research experience in these areas and the valued work with our European partners. Our speakers will give an overview of the multidisciplinary work required to understand and improve water management. They will present case studies from making Scotland a 'Hydro Nation', where water resources are developed so as to bring the maximum benefit to the Scottish economy, to Horizon 2020 research, including the ongoing project MAGIC 'Moving Towards Adaptive Governance in Complexity: Informing Nexus Security', which explores the narratives underpinning European policies and their implications for managing the water-energy-food 'nexus'.
Dr. Richard Allan has 25 years' experience in industry, working as Chief Scientist at Scottish Water and Managing Director of Scottish Water Horizons, and currently holds the Chair of the Strategic Advisory Board: Environment at CEN.
