2020 Innovation scoreboard: EU innovation continues to grow

The 2020 edition of the European innovation scoreboard has been published, drawing attention to the way the EU's innovation performance continues to steadily increase with more convergence between EU countries.

The European innovation scoreboard is a way to provide a comparative analysis of innovation performance in EU countries, other European countries and regional neighbours. The initiative assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of national innovation systems and helps countries to identify areas where work is needed.

The 2020 innovation scoreboard signifies that the EU's innovation performance has increased by 8.9% since 2012, with the biggest increases seen in Lithuania, Malta, Latvia, Portugal and Greece.

Sweden is again the EU innovation leader, followed by Finland, Denmark and the Netherlands. Luxembourg joins the innovation leaders and Portugal joins the strong innovators cateogory.

This year's scoreboard has been slightly impacted by the UK's withdrawal from the EU but the EU's relative global performance remains unaffected, where the EU has surpassed the United States for the second time.
