The European Commission launches public consultation on upcoming EU Bioeconomy Strategy

On 31 March, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the upcoming EU Bioeconomy Strategy.

The bioeconomy strategy, due for adoption by the end of 2025, will aim to boosting the EU’s competitiveness and increase green jobs while promoting a bioeconomy that reconciles different biomass uses while respecting ecosystems’ ecological boundaries. This should help bring innovative bioeconomy solutions to the market, while ensuring sustainable biomass supply in the long term and actively engaging with international partners.

The call for evidence is open until 23 June 2025 and can be accessed here.

ERRIN, through its Bioeconomy Working Group, is actively following this important policy process. In November 2024 ERRIN launched a call for members inputs, asking for insights on the legislative barriers encountered by regions that hinder the growth and development of the bioeconomy at the local level, as well as the different hierarchy of biomass utilization addressed in regional and national strategies. The inputs were shared with the Commission in January 2025. Additionally, as part of this engagement, ERRIN organised a meeting on 14 March 2025 to discuss the EU Bioeconomy Strategy Update, featuring an open dialogue between the European Commission, EU regions, and key network partners ensuring that regional perspectives, challenges and expectations were effectively conveyed.

Looking ahead, ERRIN will continue to monitor this topic and will submit its own response to the consultation based on these exchanges with members. If you would like to include any additional input, particularly in response to the questions outlined in the call for evidence, please reach out to gianpiero.petruzziello@errin.eu by 16 May.

We invite all ERRIN members to respond to the consultation by 23 June 2025 accessible here.
