Get involved in ERRIN's work shaping the EU’s long-term budget post-2027

ERRIN continues to play an active role in shaping the debate on the EU’s next long-term budget – the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034. Following the European Commission’s proposal presented in July, ERRIN network has been engaging in policy discussions, events and internal meetings to prepare joint inputs to the ongoing MFF consultations.

Coordinating ERRIN’s input to the next MFF

Over the past months, ERRIN’s members have exchanged insights on the Commission’s MFF proposal across a series of thematic Working Group meetings.

On 2 September, during an ERRIN Policy Working Group meeting, members shared initial reflections on the proposals and jointly planned follow-up activities. Building on these discussions, the conversation on the next MFF has continued across ERRIN’s Working Groups this autumn through a series of meetings digging deeper into key issues:

  • Smart Specialisation WG meeting (25 September) – focused on National and Regional Partnership (NRP) Plans and the role of Smart Specialisation Strategies (S3) in this context;
  • Policy WG internal meeting (17 October) – explored the future of Horizon Europe (FP10) and key topics to be addressed such as the role of territorial R&I ecosystems, Widening, EU Missions, and the link between Horizon Europe and European Competitiveness Fund;
  • Low Carbon Cluster and Policy WG meeting (4 November) – will address the future European Competitiveness Fund, offering the final opportunity for joint exchange before the consultation deadlines.

Draft ERRIN responses to the Commission’s MFF consultation open for member input

The Commission’s adopted proposed regulations are open for feedback through the Commission’s Have Your Say portal under seven related consultations, among which:

Building on recent Working Group discussions, the ERRIN Secretariat has started draft response documents summarising members’ initial reflections and proposed messages for each consultation. These drafts are available in the ERRIN Policy team on Teams under the MFF post-2027 channel folder. Members are now invited to share concrete input, regional examples and comments directly in the draft documents as soon as possible, before ERRIN’s final submission to the Commission. For ERRIN members who wish to get involved in ERRIN’s policy work but are not yet part of the Policy team on Teams, please contact maria.bostrom@errin.eu and ewa.chomicz@errin.eu

Members are also invited to suggest key stakeholders or policymakers we should engage with in the coming months and upload relevant policy papers to the ERRIN website.

Working together to influence the future EU R&I landscape

ERRIN’s policy work draws its strength from the collaboration between its more than 120 member regions and innovation ecosystems and its collective experience and expertise. Members’ input now is vital to help shape ERRIN’s final consultation responses to ensure a strong, evidence-based and place-based perspective in the evolving debate on the EU’s next budget and research and innovation framework.
