Portugal's Barroso Agro-sylvo-pastoral System awarded GIAHS site

The International Forum of the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems, GIAHS took place in the FAO headquarters (Rome, Italy) last 19th of April, where 14 new certificates for GIAHS classified sites were awarded. Portugal received its 1st certificate with the Barroso Agro-sylvo-pastoral System being classified as a GIAHS site. The whole process had the support of the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture and was developed by ADRAT (Development Association of Alto Tâmega Region) with the support of both Municipalities involved covered by the Barroso Region, universities and other agricultural local associations. The GIAHS certification process é promoted by FAO and intends to certify, around the world, traditional agriculture systems, for its outstanding landscapes of aesthetic beauty that combine agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems and a valuable cultural heritage.
