Water Technology & Circular Economy

May 30, 2018 (9h00 - 17h00)

Committee of the Regions, Belliardstraat 99-101, 1040 Brussel, Belgium

The Northern Netherlands, ERRIN and Wetsus are organizing a conference on Water Technology & Circular Economy. During the conference concrete examples are shown, as well as a glimpse into the future. What about recycling used toilet paper into new feedstocks for industries? Dutch Water Boards are already taken the first steps to make this a reality.

DG ENV will present new water legislation (Water Framework Directive, Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive, Microplastics, Waste Water and Circular Economy)

DG RTD will present recent developments in research and innovation policy (European Innovation Council, FP9).

Can an Innovation Prize reduce the nutrient load of incoming water in the Everglades, preventing algae blooms and restoring natural water flows? Green Water Solutions explain how they successfully participate in the 10 million dollar George Barley Water Prize.

Does legislation support innovation? Stephan Bocken, CEO of Paques, will highlight how environmental legislation over the past 50 years was key in transforming European industries. Today this innovative SME produces biogas for 2,8 million households each year and how they plan to start upscaling the production of bioplastics.

The seminar will also look into the role of innovation ecosystems. How to align companies, universities and regional government? How to create funding synergies, which stimulate critical mass? How to support Widening Participation and Stairway to Excellence?

Last but not least, regions will show what they are already doing to make the circular economy become a reality. Partners from the SCREEN project will support transregional collaboration and cross sectorial uptake of innovative solutions.
