The European Industrial Strategy announced

The Commission has announced a new strategy that focuses on a new approach to European industrial policy. The new industrial strategy aims to drive competitiveness and strategic autonomy by supporting all players of European industry, including big and small companies, innovative start-ups, research centres, service providers, suppliers and social partners. A dedicated strategy for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will assist enterprises within and beyond the single market and guide them to bring about the digital and green transitions.

The strategy will deliver on three priorities:

  • Maintaining European industry’s global competitiveness
  • Making Europe climate-neutral by 2050
  • Shaping Europe’s digital future.

Some of the initiatives that have been announced include:

  • An intellectual property action plan
  • Measures to modernise and decarbonise energy-intensive industries
  • An action plan on Critical Raw Materials
  • A new pharmaceutical strategy with digital infrastructure
  • A clean hydrogen alliance
  • Legislation on green public procurement
  • A renewed focus on innovation, investment and skills.

The risks and needs of industrial ecosystems will also be considered as part of the new strategy, as an industrial forum will be set up by September 2020.

The SME’s strategy is in the long-term focus of our Innovation & Investment Working Group. Read more about our planned activities here.
