The first call for proposal for European University alliances was a success and led to the selection of 17 alliances from 114 different higher education institutions and 24 member states. The second call for proposals will be launched this autumn. The Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (STOA Panel) has decided to organise a series of scientific events under the name of ‘Science Week at the European Parliament’. DG EAC publishes call for 'European Universities'

At the 2017 Gothenburg Summit, EU leaders outlined a vision for education and culture. This included, amongst other things, to strengthen strategic partnerships across the EU between higher education institutions and to encourage the emergence by 2024 of “European Universities” – bottom-up networks of universities across the EU, which enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in more than one Member State.
