This ESPON* workshop in Luxembourg is the third in a series of Transnational Outreach events in West Europe in 2018 and 2019 examining new developments in national and regional spatial planning. By linking the five events together, participants of all five events will gain an excellent overview of both key issues in current spatial planning theory and practice and related ESPON research. The workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss public participation processes and how to integrate the outcomes of these processes in spatial planning strategies. Key questions will be:  How can planners and policy-makers use these outputs in the drafting process of the Master Programme for Spatial Planning?  What is the added value of public participation and how can it improve the final strategy?  What makes a public participation process successful? The workshop will introduce the Luxembourg context and will provide an interim overview of the outputs from the public participation process. This setting-the-scene is followed by a panel discussion in which other countries from the West Group (FR, NL, BE, IE) are invited to comment on the Luxemburg case study from their own experiences in public participation in spatial planning. The workshop will then gather input from ESPON projects such as ACTAREA and other specialists and experts before finishing with an interactive discussion to produce recommendations on future actions and a potential research agenda.
