EU Energy systems and grids: state of play and territorial perspectives
In 2026, the ERRIN Energy & Clean Transition Working Group launched a dedicated workstream on European energy systems and grids, responding to the rapidly evolving EU policy framework and the growing urgency to modernise, expand and decentralise electricity infrastructure across Europe.
The meeting will provide ERRIN members with a comprehensive overview of ongoing EU-level discussions and initiatives shaping the future of energy systems. It will start with an overview of the European Parliament’s work on energy systems (TBC), including key legislative files and political priorities. This will be followed by insights from the European Commission on major upcoming and recent initiatives, such as the Action Plan for Affordable Energy, the Energy Grids Package and the upcoming EU Electrification Action Plan, expected in the second quarter of 2026 and covering key sectors such as industry, transport and heating and cooling. Reflections on energy systems in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) will also be tackled, helping to set the scene.
Building on this policy context, the session will then explore implementation perspectives through concrete examples. The Clean Energy Transition (CET) Partnership will present its work on integrated regional energy systems, highlighting opportunities for coordination and innovation across territories. This will be complemented by an introduction to the CET Partnership's upcoming call for proposals 2026, including key opportunities for regional stakeholders.
The meeting will conclude with an open discussion, offering ERRIN members the opportunity to exchange views, raise questions and reflect on the role of regions and cities in advancing resilient, integrated and future-proof energy systems across Europe.
The meeting will take place in person at the ERRIN Office. Registration for in‑person attendance is open until 15 May via the registration button on the right-hand side of this page. Please note that only logged‑in users can register.
Stakeholders based in the regions who are unable to travel to Brussels may follow the meeting online by sending an email to silvia.ghiretti@errin.euby 15 May. You will receive the connection link one day before the event.
