Policy Talk on how cultural heritage should fit into future European AI policies

The European Heritage Hub is organising the high-level online Policy Talk 'INNOVATE. PROTECT. EMPOWER.: How cultural heritage can make Public AI a reality', taking place on 29 September, from 16:00 to 18:00 CET.

Organised by Europeana within the framework and support of the EU-funded European Heritage Hub Preparatory Action, the event will bring together policymakers, innovators and leaders from the cultural heritage and AI communities in Europe and beyond. The discussion aims to build a shared vision for Public AI and identify common policy priorities for the sector.

Shaping a European vision for Public AI

AI is rapidly transforming societies, economies and cultural sectors. At the same time, the concept of Public AI is gaining attention as an approach to artificial intelligence that is more democratic, pluralistic and accountable, with the public interest at its core.

For the cultural heritage sector, this presents both opportunities and responsibilities. With its extensive collections, data, knowledge and expertise, the sector can contribute to building a more diverse, fair and sustainable AI ecosystem in Europe.

The Policy Talk will explore the role cultural heritage can play in this process, including how the sector can contribute to the development and deployment of AI, what partnerships are needed to advance a Public AI agenda, and what policy changes and investments could help turn this vision into reality.

The discussion will draw on the recent paper 'Making Public AI reality: How cultural heritage can lead the way', developed within the data space for cultural heritage. It will also introduce an upcoming European Heritage Hub Policy Paper with recommendations on strengthening the cultural heritage sector’s role in shaping Europe’s AI future.

The event will provide an opportunity to share practices and experiences from Europe and beyond, develop a common understanding of the sector’s contribution to Public AI, and identify priorities for future cooperation and advocacy.
