2020 European Capitals of Culture extended into 2021

2020 European Capitals of Culture extended into 2021

As the current European Capitals of Culture, Rijeka (Croatia) and Galway (Ireland), have been severely effected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Commission is seeking to extend their possession of the title until 30th April 2021. The consequences of the pandemic have meant that the two cities have faced restrictions in implementing their European Capital of Culture initiatives.

By consequence, this will mean that the next title holders will also be impacted. Novi Sad (Serbia) will now be European Capital of Culture 2022 and Timisoara (Romania) and Elefsina (Greece) will be European Capitals of Culture from 2021 to 2023.

The proposal will now be passed on to the European Parliament and Council for consideration.
