Adoption of the CoR opinion on "Strengthening Innovation in Europe's Regions"

On 16th May, the opinion on “Strengthening Innovation in Europe’s Regions: Strategies for resilient, inclusive and sustainable growth” drafted by Mikel Irujo Amezaga, Head of the Navarre Government Delegation in Brussels and member of ERRIN Management Board, was adopted unanimously during the Committee of the Regions Plenary. Smart Specialisation strategies have been a success story of EU's cohesion policy and created in many regions a new cooperation culture. The opinion invites the European Commission to take one step further and initiate Smart Specialisation 2.0 promoting further interregional cooperation. The opinion stresses that the Smart Specialisation 2.0 should be based on developing an "inter-regional discovery process" in which regions pool their strategies involving the interregional triple helixes. ERRIN was actively involved in the preparation of the opinion. ERRIN Director, Pirita Lindholm, worked as an expert to the report with the support of ERRIN Smart Specialisation Working Group. The Committee of the Regions press release is available here.
