Covenant of Mayors renews climate pledges

The new Covenant of Mayors commitment was launched today. The new commitment aims to empower local and regional leaders by renewing its climate pledges and activating a new network of 27 Committee of the Regions Ambassadors.

Signatories will commit to increasing their objectives related to emissions cuts, climate adaptation and just transition, with goals for both 2030 and 2050. It aims to raise ambition on the path towards climate neutrality in line with the European Green Deal and with a greater emphasis on action. The increased commitment of cities in their engagement of citizens, businesses and local stakeholders will be made possible through the Climate Pact.

Last year, ERRIN gathered inputs from members on their expectations of the Climate Pact, which were developed into a contribution proposal. Read the contribution here

The renewed covenant comes as a provisional agreement on the European Climate Law is reached between the co-legislators.
