Commission launches the European Cancer Imaging Initiative

European Cancer Imaging Initiative launched

Earlier this week, the European Commission launched the European Cancer Imaging Initiative, part of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan. The initiative will support healthcare providers, research institutes and innovators in making the best use of innovative data-driven solutions for cancer treatment and care. A digital infrastructure will be created, linking up resources and databases of cancer imaging data across the EU. The EUCAIM project and the AI Testing and Experimentation Facility for Health (TEF-Health) will take the lead in implementing the initiative.

The cross-border, interoperable, and secure infrastructure will preserve privacy and aims to speed up innovation in medical research. With this digital infrastructure, it will be possible to train new technologies that use artificial intelligence (AI) on a large dataset, which is standardised and fully compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is expected that the first version of the platform will be released by the end of 2024, with the final release expected by the end of 2025.
