European Commission Launches Consultation on 2025 Research and Technology Infrastructure Strategy

European Commission launches consultation on 2025 research and technology infrastructure strategy

The European Commission has announced plans to adopt a European Strategy on Research and Technology Infrastructures in 2025, aiming to boost the EU’s scientific excellence, technological innovation and industrial competitiveness.

The forthcoming strategy will mark a key step in the EU’s efforts to create a more integrated and sustainable ecosystem of research and technology infrastructures. These infrastructures, from advanced laboratories and testing facilities to digital platforms and data repositories, are seen as vital tools for supporting deep-tech advancements, enabling breakthrough discoveries and maintaining the EU’s leadership in strategic sectors.

Enhancing Europe’s Research and Innovation Landscape

Building on the European Research Area (ERA) framework, the strategy will propose a coordinated approach to improving the accessibility, sustainability and effectiveness of research and technology infrastructures across the EU. It will support wider EU priorities such as the green transition, digital transformation and technological sovereignty, while also helping startups and scaleups tap into cutting-edge facilities.

Addressing major challenges

The Commission acknowledges that Europe’s current research infrastructure landscape faces significant challenges. Many facilities operate in isolation, leading to duplication and uneven access. Regional disparities further deepen the innovation gap, preventing researchers and businesses in some areas from benefiting fully.

Funding fragmentation is another major issue. Research infrastructures often rely on uncoordinated national, regional and EU-level financing, which undermines long-term sustainability. The new strategy aims to improve coordination and ensure more stable, strategic investment.

Public consultation open until 22 May

To shape this major initiative, the European Commission has launched a public consultation, inviting stakeholders, including researchers, innovators, businesses, and citizens, to provide input until 22 May 2025.

The feedback gathered will help inform the final strategy, ensuring it reflects the needs and expectations of the EU’s scientific and industrial communities.
