Mind the R&I gap – co-RRI in response to global challenges

FoTRRIS project, where ERRIN is a consortium partner, is coming to an end soon. FoTRRIS has developed and introduced new governance practices to foster Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) policies and methods in Research and Innovation (R&I) systems. Six local experiments have been carried out in five countries, namely Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Italy and Spain. These experiments were real ‘living labs’ to develop, test and validate in a co-created way a new methodological approach for the first step in the research cycle, that is the process to come to a project concept. These project concepts were meant to tackle a ‘glocal problem’ or, said otherwise, a specific local manifestation of a global challenge. The issues that were tackled related to sustainable food (AT), material scarcity (BE), local economic development (HU),  renewable energies (IT), empowerment of women with disabilities, and the integration of refugees (ES). Tackling the grand challenges – the aim of Responsible R&I – requires developing more functional socio-economic models for addressing the needs of the global society within the carrying capacity of the Earth. This implies an innovative, systemic and transdisciplinary approach to R&I. It creates a need for intermediary structures, reconnecting established knowledge institutions with the broader society for the co-creation of local answers to global challenges. If you are interested to learn more about how to engage local stakeholders in transdisciplinary processes and how to bring about positive changes at the local level, nominate one of your regional stakeholders from the quadruple helix model (one person/region) to attend the final conference which will take place  on 27/03 in Brussels.  For more information about the conditions of participation, please contact projects@errin.eu before 9/03. Only a limited number of places available!
