Her main research interest has been in demographic history. In the past years she has been working on the massive migration impact upon the Rio de la Plata area (Argentina) between 1815 and 1895. The purpose of the research is to explore social, economic and cultural changes in that region. She studied different facets of the strategies that allowed migrants to carve a niche in the country of reception as well as the reaction of the native populations already living in the area to the new economic activities induced by the newcomers, who were often more skilled.
Indeed, in order to attract skilled European migrants, the government provided them with all kind of facilities apt to ease their settlement. In the decade of 1860, a real massacre of foreigners happened by a group of native population, real outcasts many times. This led to explore the origins of such an event and how local people could perceive that “invasion”. Therefore, in the present she is working on discourses and how to integrate them, on the supposed duties and rights of foreigners/ migrants, and the perception by local society. Also, Ms Contente was the scientific coordinator and researcher of an ERC project.
