The Representation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt to the European Union and the Ministry for Economic Affairs, Science and Digitalisation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt cordially invite you to attend “Algae – Sustainable biomass production for a green economy and the future of nutrition in Europe – Innovations made in Saxony-Anhalt” on Tuesday, 5 November 2019 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Representation of the State of Saxony-Anhalt to the EU.

The demand for sustainably produced biomass is increasing, be it for energy use, as feed, food or as a renewable raw material for other industries. Algae will play a key role in the future as they don’t require agricultural land for cultivation, grow faster than land-based plants and are produced in a resource-friendly manner. Saxony-Anhalt has taken on a pioneer role in the development of this young, innovative industry. For more than 20 years, microalgae have been produced there on an industrial scale, new plant technologies have been explored, research has been conducted and products have been developed.

This event will see leading experts in the field of microalgae presenting recent developments in the sustainable biomass sector, while also focusing on its potential and existing limitations. This will demonstrate the need for action - both in practical and political terms - in order to promote the swift and efficient development of sustainable technologies. The theme of the event is integral to the current negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework post-2020. The event is expected to outline initial funding opportunities for the algae industry in the new innovation and research framework programme known as “Horizon Europe”, but also discuss regulatory barriers for the sector with representatives of the EU institutions.

In addition, we also encourage participants to "experience algae", where companies will present their products, algae dishes are available to taste and of course there is the opportunity to talk to many interesting stakeholders.
