CONFERENCE ON INNOVATIONS TO REDUCE AND REMEDIATE FARM SOIL POLLUTION. A CONTRIBUTION TO THE EU SOIL STRATEGY.

Conference on Innovations to reduce and remediate farm soil pollution – a contribution to the EU Soil Strategy, to be held on 21 November, 15:00 – 18:00, at the EU Committee of the Regions.

Three EU projects, with over 40 participants from EU member states and beyond, have teamed up to offer their contribution to the EU Soil Strategy objectives based on their project developments and results with different perspectives: environment, soil, agriculture, chemicals or food safety. The aim of this event is to share relevant information from the project results and encourage an open debate about their potential impact on European policies. Specifically:

  • A new method to remediate soils with pesticide residues successfully put in practice combining solarization and ozonation, reaching a degradation rate of 63% of soil pesticide content. However, the use of ozone in agriculture is not allowed at present and there is a legal gap regarding its application for other soil remediation purposes.  LIFE AgRemSO3il
  • A new strategy for crop diversification providing a lower use of inputs including fertilizers and pesticides, as well as increments in biodiversity and soil health, including soil carbon sequestration and storage; thus, improving the delivery of ecosystem services while increasing overall land productivity and the access to new markets and reduced economy risks.  Diverfarming
  • An increase of healthy soils in Europe by the appropriate application of green manure and organic matter, as well as by biosolarisation and ASD, together with the plan of sound crop rotations, with the aim of controlling soilborne pathogens and nematodesBest4soil

About the EU projects:

  • LIFE Programme - LIFE AgRemSO3il - Agrochemical remediation in farm soils that combines new, innovative techniques
  • HORIZON 2020 - Diverfarming - A new strategy for crop diversification and low-input farming
  • HORIZON 2020 - Best4soil -A network of practitioners for sharing knowledge on the prevention and reduction of soil-borne diseases
