The Emilia-Romagna Region with a population of 4,4 mill. inhabitants (7% of Italy), has a GDP of 141 bill Euro (GDP per Capita Index: 127). The industrial system is based on 382.186 small and medium companies.

The research infrastructure is made out of: 

·         6 Universities (11 locations): Bologna, Ferrara, Modena and Reggio Emilia, Parma, Piacenza

·         Over 150,000 students  (8,3% of national total amount)

The main research centers highly specialised (including main branches of National Research Institutes and specialised centres) are:

CNR - National Research Council (16 institutions), ENEA - Italian National agency for new technologies, Energy and sustainable economic development (4 centers), INFM - National Institute for Material Physics , IASF – Italian national institute for astrophysics, INGV – National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, CINECA - the largest Italian computing centre, IOR – Orthopedic Institute Rizzoli, CNIT - the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications, SSICA – Preserves’ Experimental Centre in Parma, CMR - Regenerative Medicine Center “Stefano Ferrari”.

ART-ER Attractiveness Research Territory is the Emilia-Romagna Consortium including the Regional Government, the University, the Research Bodies - CNR, ENEA, INFN - operating in the region, the regional Union of the Chambers of Commerce and other local representatives.

ART-ER's mission to foster sustainable growth of the regional territory by developing innovation and knowledge, attractiveness and internationalisation of the territorial system.
