Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe

The Mission Soil aims to accelerate the transition towards healthy soils by 2030 through the creation of 100 Living Labs and Lighthouses across Europe. Living Labs serve as collaborative spaces where researchers, farmers, foresters, land managers, citizens and other stakeholders co-create knowledge and test innovative solutions for soil health at local and regional level. For the purpose of the Mission Soil, Lighthouses are defined as key placed for demonstration of solutions that are exemplary in their performance in terms of soil health improvement.

ERRIN plays a key role in supporting the implementation of Mission Soil by engaging regional and local stakeholders, facilitating dialogue and supporting the development and deployment of soil living labs and lighthouses. Since becoming the first stakeholder to sign the Mission Soil Manifesto, ERRIN has worked closely with the Mission Soil Secretariat at the European Commission to raise awareness among members about opportunities for involvement and to connect actors across governance levels.

Through its Bioeconomy Working Group, ERRIN has co-organised major events such as the EU Soil Day in 2023 and actively contributed to the annual editions of the ‘European Mission Soil Week’. It has also organised dedicated project development sessions to help members prepare for Mission Soil calls and foster potential consortia.

Through its involvement in the SOILL project, ERRIN supports the deployment of the Living Labs and Lighthouses funded under the Mission. At this stage, more than 45 Living Labs kicked off their activities. Within SOILL, ERRIN leads the work on fostering collaboration and synergies within the Soil Health Living Labs and Lighthouses, as well as with the broader SOILL community to ensure the impact of the Mission at local level.

ERRIN’s Bioeconomy Working Group, together with the SOILL project, provide multiple opportunities for ERRIN members to actively engage in the Mission Soil. Current opportunities include:
