Lahti, Finland announced as European Green Capital 2021 winner

The winner of the European Green Capital 2021 competition has been announced as Lahti, Finland, following a unanimous decision by the judges. Lahti, a partner of the ERRIN member Helsinki EU Office, was one of three cities to make it to the final stage of the competition, alongside Lille and Strasbourg, also our members.

The award comes after each city made presentations in June 2019, where they outlined their commitment to sustainable urban development.

Lahti was distinguished in certain areas, particularly air quality, waste, green growth, eco-innovation and governance, which it achieved through its 'Bold Enviromental City' strategy.

The jury were encouraged that green cities are healthier and happier places for people to live, work and visit, praising the finalists for demonstrating the affordability of a green transition.
