As part of its work within the NetZeroCities project, ERRIN has developed three case studies showcasing the critical role that regions can play in the EU Mission on 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 (Cities Mission), using examples from ERRIN member regions. With their climate-related competencies and responsibilities within national governance structures, and role in implementing national policies and facilitating financing, regions are uniquely positioned to support cities in achieving their climate neutrality goals.
The first case study explores the integration of EU Missions into regional strategies, highlighting the experiences of the Blekinge Region in making EU Missions a priority within its smart specialisation strategy. By focusing on EU Missions, the region has strengthened collaboration with its regional innovation ecosystem, notably through Mission Pilots, and has successfully leveraged European Regional Development Fund resources for projects aligned with Mission objectives.
The second case study explores how regions can support cities in their climate neutrality efforts, focusing on the Polish national Cities Mission platform. This platform includes the regional administrations of the five Mission Cities - Lower Silesia, Małopolska, Mazovia, Łódzkie and Podkarpackie. The regions are seen as key collaborators in multiple areas, including policy development, knowledge and skills transfer, and funding.
The third case study highlights the collaboration between the Valencia Region and the City of Valencia in developing the city’s Climate City Contract. The region played a critical role by providing support and committing to actions that will help the city achieve its climate neutrality goals by 2030.
The case studies can be found as attachments to this news article.
ERRIN will continue to explore the important role regions play in supporting the Cities Mission objectives through its work in the NetZeroCities project. Learn more about ERRIN’s involvement in the project here.
