Policy
The Policy Working Group works closely with the Management Board and the leaders of the other WGs to position ERRIN on cross-cutting policy issues. The WG follows closely overall research and innovation policy, in particular the Horizon Europe framework programme, from an overarching perspective and ensuring coordination of horizontal programme aspects. The WG also focuses on the preparations to the next framework programme (FP10), implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) as the renewed policy framework and agenda for research and innovation, as well as on the New European Innovation Agenda, especially strengthening ecosystems and the “Regional Innovation Valleys” initiative.

Autumn General Meeting 2024
ERRIN’s 2024 Autumn General Meeting will take place on 5 December from 16:30 at the ERRIN premises in Brussels. The meeting will be followed by a networking reception with keynote speeches from a representative of the Cabinet of Ekaterina Zaharieva, the new Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, as well as from Magdalena Kula, Research Attaché at the Polish Permanent Representation in view of the upcoming Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
European Partnership Stakeholder Forum 2024: 20 years of European Partnerships: Reflecting on the past – Shaping the Future
ERA-LEARN and the European Commission will co-organise the third European Partnership Stakeholder Forum on 4-5 December 2024 in Brussels. The Forum is expected to gather over 250 participants from European Partnerships, addressing achievements, challenges and the way forward for the initiative. Registration for physical or virtual attendance is possible until 15 November.
European University Alliances and their commitment to support the connection of regional innovation ecosystems
This meeting of the Science and Education for Society (SEFS) Working Group, taking place on 2 December from 14:00-16:00, aims to foster a mutual learning exchange between European University Alliances and their regions. Attendees will learn about how alliances are committed to support the connections between regional innovation ecosystems. The Road to Net Zero: How to Pave the Way for Carbon Farming, Removal, and Capture
To reach the world’s climate goals, governments should consider ways of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in addition to stepping up efforts to reduce emissions. This means we should be thinking about a variety of mitigation approaches. This event focusses on three of these: Carbon Farming (CF), Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilisation (CCS/CCU) and Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies. Report of the Expert Group on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe released
On 16 October 2024, the awaited report of the Expert Group on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe was launched. Looking towards the future of EU research and innovation, the report outlines 12 recommendations in the spirit of its title: "Act, Align, Accelerate – Research, Technology and Innovation to boost European competitiveness".

2030CATALYSTS: Open call for EU regions to implement the SDGs
A new call for EU regions to turn the SDGs into local missions is now open. The 2030CATALYSTS project will support a maximum of 20 EU regions to enhance their approaches to SDG monitoring and implementation, and pave the way for effective, data-driven, co-created strategies. The call for expression of interest is open until 31 October 2024.
EU Preparatory Action on Innovation for Place-Based Transformation - apply by 16 December
The European Commission’s JRC has launched the EU Preparatory Action on Innovation for Place-Based Transformation, a new initiative supported by the European Parliament and designed to help territories maximise their innovation potential. The deadline to apply to participate was extended - public authorities from across the EU and Horizon Europe Associated Countries now have until 16 December to answer the call.
Another 20 cities receive EU Mission Label for advancing climate neutrality goals
On 8 October, the European Commission revealed the next 20 European cities to be awarded the EU Mission Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities label for their plans to reach climate neutrality by 2030. 8 of these cities are located in ERRIN member regions. The first 10 cities received their Mission Label in October 2023, followed by 23 more cities that were awarded in March 2024. This brings the total number of cities with the label to 53.
Emerging R&I ecosystems - open 'COOPERATE' call to receive support and advice
The COOPERATE project invites emerging Research and Innovation (R&I) ecosystems to participate in its 'Call for Champions', offering an opportunity to advance your ecosystem toward becoming an ERA Hub. Through the 'Call for Champions', the COOPERATE project will support two ecosystems in enhancing collaboration, knowledge exchange and maturity as part of the European Research Area (ERA). Information webinar on 10 October, deadline to submit on 30 October.
