Bioeconomy
The Working Group focuses on increasing the influence of regions and their stakeholders in shaping the European circular bioeconomy while also focusing on the Horizon Europe Mission Soil. The group covers the bioeconomy in the widest sense, tackling issues related to topics such as food systems, soil health, forestry, bioenergy, biowaste, bio-based products, among other things. Seeing the growing role of the bioeconomy in decarbonisation efforts, the group also concentrates on the ecological sustainability of these solutions (e.g. nature-based solutions, green and blue solutions for carbon capture). The group develops contacts with European policymakers to increase cooperation and projects between European regions in bioeconomy, with a particular focus on Horizon Europe and the Circular Bio-based Europe Partnership.

The upcoming ERRIN Policy Working Group meeting on 19 October will focus on Horizon Europe strategic planning for 2025-2027, taking stock of EU Missions and preparations to FP10. The HuMUS Project is organising its first local soil health webinar on Thursday 19 October from 10:00 to 11:30 CEST. This event will convene representatives of European municipalities and regions, EU policymakers and soil health advocates to discuss soil health regeneration focusing on participatory methods.
Moving on: towards a circular and sustainable European society
The MISTRA REES research program is organising a 2-day in-person workshop on 12 and 13 October about the circular transition from an industry perspective in Brussels. Several experts, both from industry as well as from academia, will discuss developments in policies, standards and business models.

The Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in collaboration with the European Commission organises a high-level conference to reflect on the New European Innovation Agenda, and to discuss the challenges faced by public and private actors concerning deep-tech innovation and its contribution to the twin and digital transitions. The event will take place on 10 October 2023 in Madrid.

Developing Urban Living Labs is a relatively novel approach in urban areas, and consequently, there are many challenges and barriers that cities face during ULL adoption. This handbook, developed by the UNaLab project, aims to identify and explore some common barriers to the adoption of Urban Living Labs, and provide cities with a tool and an understanding of how to strategically address these barriers.

EU's Knowledge Ecosystems: A Regional Stakeholder Survey
The ERA FABRIC project, which aims to define the ERA Hubs concept across Europe, launched a survey for regional stakeholders to identify the most recurrent characteristics and parameters of excellence of European knowledge ecosystems. Call for questions on the Circular Bio-based Europe partnership
The Bioeconomy Working Group leaders will together with the ERRIN Secretariat have an informal exchange with representatives of the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking to discuss the transition from BBI JU to the Circular Bio-based Europe JU. Bioeconomy WG members are now invited to submit questions which they would like the leaders to bring up in this discussion.

Action Plan to boost organic production
The Commission has presented an Action Plan for the development of organic production. Its aim is to boost the production and consumption of organic products in the EU, raise agricultural land under organic farming to 25% by 2030 and increase organic aquaculture.

A Spanish-Polish consortium is looking for a leader of the project, within the LIFE program, related to priority: “Climate change mitigation and adaptation” possibly a municipality, located in the south of Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Germany) interested in developing innovative spatial green infrastructure. Project objectives: comparison of the micro-climatic functionality of the PMS structures for both locations where they will be built, i.e. under conditions of cool Central European climate and warm Southern European climate in the context of cooling of the “heat islands” in the city centers, as well as comparison of the functioning of these structures in a different urban contexts in social, cultural and economic terms.
