Design & Creativity
The Design & Creativity WG aims to raise awareness of design and creativity as tools and drivers for innovation in different sectors and across Europe. Our objectives are the following: To present challenges; especially in relation to sectors that do not yet work with design (thinking) and creativity; to showcase the importance of design & creativity through good examples and concrete cases; to create a strong and vital community among our stakeholders across Europe through a bottom-up approach; to connect designers, thinkers, business, policy and society interested in finding common solutions for different challenges and to create opportunities for the WG members to develop project proposals, share their ideas, stories and ongoing activities with the EU community.

The next steps on the Tourism Transition Pathway - Cultural Heritage and Tourism Working Group Meeting
Following the T4T stakeholder event that will be held on 15 March and the continuous interest of ERRIN members towards the Tourism Transition Pathway (TTP), ERRIN's Cultural Heritage & Tourism Working Group is planning an online meeting taking place on 26 March, with the aim to provide members with the latest information on its initiatives and concrete achievements.
European Research and Innovation Days (R&I Days) 2024
The European Commission’s annual flagship research and innovation event will take place on 20 and 21 March 2024, both physically in Brussels and online. The R&I Days 2024 will give you the opportunity to debate how we can make Europe more sustainable and competitive and will celebrate the outcomes and achievements in research and innovation since the launch of the first R&I Framework Programme over 40 years ago.
ERRIN R&I Days networking reception
On the occasion of the European R&I Week, we would like to warmly invite you to a networking reception on 19 March from 18:00-20:30 at the ERRIN premises in Brussels (Rue du Luxembourg 3). On the eve of the EU R&I Days 2024, ERRIN wishes to bring together local and regional R&I enthusiasts from our community across Europe to meet up and discuss the way forward with the EU R&I policy and funding.
'Together for EU Tourism' (T4T) stakeholder event and anniversary
In 2024, DG GROW will be celebrating the second anniversary of the Transition Pathway for Tourism. To mark this milestone, the Commission is organising a dedicated stakeholder event on 15 March 2024 (9:30-15:30 CET), reflecting on past achievements and future developments of the tourism ecosystem and showcasing inspiring pledges submitted by stakeholders.
New Bauhaus Stories, Episode #1: Co-design of regeneration schemes
The NEBULA project is organising a series of peer learning activities to share experiences and insights about the New European Bauhaus. The first episode is entitled: “Co-creation of regeneration schemes’. It aims to discuss how two ongoing urban regeneration schemes are being co-designed in collaboration with citizens and various stakeholders from the construction value chain.

The first Regional Innovation Valleys calls for proposals under the European Innovation Ecosystems (EIE) part of Horizon Europe and under the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument of the ERDF were launched by the European Commission on 17 May with an overall budget of EUR 122 million. The closing date for applying is 17 October 2023.

On 15 May, the European Commission's DG RTD launched a call for applications for the Commission Expert Group on the Interim Evaluation of Horizon Europe. The group shall gather 15 highly experienced members with the aim to provide the Commission with strategic recommendations to feed into the design of the next Framework Programme 2028-2034.
EU Missions creating new markets: the crucial role of the triple helix collaboration
ERRIN is collaborating with the TRAMI project to organise a Mutual Learning Event on the Wednesday 17 May from 9:00-12:30, exploring the role of industry, academia and public authorities in achieving the objectives of the five EU Missions through triple helix collaboration.
Interreg EUROPE - Search for Partners from Finland, Sweden, Norway for project on spaces for creativity and culture for youth
Puglia are searching for partners from Finland, Sweden and Norway for an INTERREG Europe call. The project proposal aims to build knowledge and to enhance public policies related to hybrid spaces for young people dedicated to creativity, culture and innovation.
Cultural Heritage in Action concludes with valuable outcomes for cities and regions
The Creative Europe peer-learning scheme for cities and regions on cultural heritage, implemented by Eurocities, KEA, ERRIN, Europa Nostra, and the Architects Council of Europe presents now a digital toolbox, a catalogue of good practices and a thematic analysis as its outcomes.

The Commission’s proposal to create an EU NEB Mission
In the mid-term review of the EU Missions, published last week, the European Commission has put forward a proposal to create a new EU Mission on the New European Bauhaus (NEB). ERRIN’s Task Force is planning an event in October which will aim to gather concrete input from ERRIN members about the future of NEB.

EU Missions: The European Commission publishes its first mid-term review
On 19 July, the European Commission (EC) published a Communication on the assessment of the EU Missions after two years of implementation. The EC details the Missions' successes but also recognises the need to address challenges related to governance, budget, citizens and private sector engagement. The EC also proposes to add a sixth Mission on the New European Bauhaus.

Culture & Creativity Cluster mapping: express you interest in the upcoming calls
The Cultural Heritage & Tourism Working Group is planning a project development session on 14 September 2023 in Brussels, with the participation of the Design & Creativity Working Group and the NEB task force. We invite all ERRIN members and their regional ecosystems to express their interest through the survey online by Monday 4 September.

Circular economy: improving design and end-of-life management of cars for more resource-efficient automotive sector
The Commission is proposing new measures to enhance the circularity of the automotive sector, covering the design, production and end-of-life treatment of vehicles. The proposed regulation is expected to have substantial environmental benefits, including an annual reduction of 12.3 million tons of CO2 emissions by 2035, better valorisation of 5.4 million tons of materials, and increased recovery of critical raw materials.

Call for submissions of cities and regions: good practices on high quality architecture and built environment
Eurocities and the Architects’ Council of Europe have launched a call for 30 best practices on high-quality architecture in cities and regions. 12 will get the opportunity to host a peer learning visit to one of the other selected cities or areas, allowing participants to learn from each other and from experts. Deadline 11 August.

ERRIN Spring AGM 2023 – taking stock of the EU Missions
ERRIN’s Spring Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2023 took place on 22 June this year. As always, it brought together the large and dynamic community of member regions and cities. Following the format part with the update from the network, the main focus was the EU Missions, approached in two policy debates, on the support and implementation frameworks in Adaptation, Ocean and Waters and Soil Missions, and the governance innovation and the perspective on Cities and the Cancer Missions.
