EU Design Day 2026 explores New European Bauhaus solutions for affordable housing and urban regeneration

On 11 June 2026, policymakers, designers, researchers, architects, practitioners and urban innovators gathered in Brussels for EU Design Day 2026, a full-day event dedicated to rethinking how design can shape the future of housing, cities and community life through the New European Bauhaus initiative.

The event explored how the New European Bauhaus can serve as a catalyst for addressing Europe's housing challenges, supporting urban regeneration, and fostering inclusive approaches to shaping cities and communities.

Throughout the day, participants showcased a wide range of projects demonstrating how design-driven approaches are already transforming living environments:

  • The first session focused on inclusive and social housing and the built environment, showcasing innovative approaches from Italy and Czechia
  • The second session explored sustainable housing and climate adaptation solutions, highlighting projects from Denmark and Spain that integrate environmental resilience into residential development.
  • The third session examined culture-driven place development through inspiring examples from France and Sweden, illustrating how culture-led initiatives can strengthen local identity and revitalise communities.
  • The fourth session focused on participatory urban regeneration in the Netherlands and Czechia, highlighting the importance of citizen engagement in shaping more inclusive and responsive urban environments.

In addition to the local and regional examples from across different ERRIN member regions, we were honoured to welcome keynote speakers:

  • Giorgio Gori, MEP and vice-chair of the ITRE Committee
  • Laura Hagemann Arellano, from the NEB Unit of JRC, and
  • Anaclaudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat

Drawing on perspectives from regional, European and global policymaking, they underscored the importance of collaboration across governance levels and the exchange of innovative solutions in addressing pressing urban challenges and the affordable housing crisis.
