Rural areas face significant healthcare challenges. An aging population, a shortage of professionals, and geographic dispersion make it difficult to provide adequate care for chronic diseases. This leads to health inequalities between rural and urban populations and negatively impacts socioeconomic development.

The H-ARPA project proposes a healthcare model that integrates technological solutions to improve access, continuity of care, early detection of complications, and the quality of care for people with chronic diseases in rural settings. The project will be supported by local healthcare stakeholders such as rural pharmacies and local entities.

Key Innovations:

  • Personalized technological solutions
  • Voice telemonitoring system
  • Platform for monitoring and early detection of complications
  • Mobility system

The project will adopt a multidisciplinary approach and implement pilots in Spain, Portugal, and France to validate the model and facilitate its large-scale implementation. Transnational cooperation will allow for the sharing of knowledge and experiences to identify solutions adapted to the needs of each country's rural environment, regardless of the current healthcare model. This will avoid duplication of effort and maximize the impact and transferability of the project's developments.

Delivering the European Green Deal - towards a coherent and integrated EU ocean policy framework for offshore renewable wind energy and biodiversity

Delivering the European Green Deal - towards a coherent and integrated EU ocean policy framework for offshore renewable wind energy and biodiversity

The European Green Deal (EGD) brings forth a comprehensive set of objectives and targets that are relevant to the use and protection of our oceans. A major challenge is the realisation of these ocean-related objectives. Current governance landscapes are multi-sector, multilevel and complex, and the pathway towards the achievement of the EGD ambitions for the European seas is not straightforward.

In this roundtable, we will discuss the role of policy coherence and institutional integration in delivering the EGD, with a focus on offshore wind energy and biodiversity.  We will present the first results of two Horizon Europe research projects (CrossGov and PERMAGOV). Both projects study how to navigate the complexity of EU marine governance under the EGD to develop a coherent and integrated EU ocean policy framework.

Together with EU policy makers, who will share insights from their policy areas, this roundtable sheds light on how insights from scientific research within the two projects can contribute to better integration and coherence between offshore renewable energy and biodiversity ambitions. This roundtable is of relevance for policy makers, stakeholders, and researchers involved in EU marine governance.

Funding for cultural heritage: the role of the European Investment Bank

Online masterclass “Funding for cultural heritage: the role of the European Investment Bank”

Cultural heritage has been a long-standing area of funding and advisory services by the European Investment Bank. Such funding and advisory services are concentrated in European countries and can range from the conservation of UNESCO World Heritage Sites to urban renewal, notably in less developed European cities and regions.

Accordingly, the EIB Institute has ensured cultural heritage is included in its programme of activities. Since 2013, the EIB Institute has partnered with Europa Nostra, notably under the 7 Most Endangered Programme. This innovative programme mixes the cultural expertise and advocacy work of Europa Nostra with the technical and financial appraisal of the EIB.

This online event is free of charge, but registration is compulsory (registered participants will receive a Zoom link one day before the event). Due to limited capacity, we kindly ask you to register as soon as possible to secure your participation. You are welcome to extend this invitation to your colleagues. To have a look at the programme and register for the event, please click here.

This online masterclass is organised in the frame of the Europa Nostra’s network project European Cultural Heritage Agora “Empowering Europe’s Civil Society for Heritage (2022-2024), which is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

HOOP Policy Conference: What barriers and drivers for the transition to local circular bioeconomy systems?

HOOP Policy Conference: What barriers and drivers for the transition to local circular bioeconomy systems?

The HOOP Policy Conference, taking place on 4-5 June in Brussels, will discuss the barriers and drivers for transitioning to local circular bioeconomy systems. This conference will bring cities and regions together to discuss and learn about implementing innovative circular bioeconomy solutions. A dedicated policy session will allow cities to voice their concerns and challenges to EU institutions and federations.

You can find the detailed programme here; registration is open until 24 May.

The HOOP project supports eight lighthouse cities and regions in developing large-scale urban circular bioeconomy initiatives focusing on making bio-based products from urban biowaste and wastewater. The HOOP Urban Circular Bioeconomy Hub will create an online platform to foster knowledge exchange and replication in cities and regions across Europe. HOOP will provide Project Development Assistance (PDA) to Albano-Laziale (Italy), Almere (The Netherlands), Bergen (Norway), Kuopio (Finland), Münster (Germany), Murcia (Spain), Greater Porto (Portugal), and Western Macedonia (Greece). This project is funded under Horizon 2020 and labelled as a CCRI-project, providing project development assistance to the eight cities and regions involved, thriving the implementation of circular systemic solutions at local and regional level forward.

ERRIN's  Bioeconomy Working Group closely monitors the topic of circular economy. The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative, one of ERRIN's projects, supports the implementation of circular systemic solutions at local and regional level.

Knowledge valorisation for the regional and local R&I ecosystems

Knowledge valorisation for the regional and local R&I ecosystems

This thematic seminar "Knowledge valorisation for the regional and local R&I ecosystems", jointly organised by the European Commission and the European Committee of the Regions on 14 May, will focus on how regional and local authorities can foster knowledge valorisation and boost innovation ecosystems, translating knowledge into practical and innovative solutions. The workshop will explore this question, drawing upon experiences and practical insights gained from the Mutual Learning Exercise on Knowledge Valorisation and from the Committee’s Members.

One of the flagship areas of the New European Innovation Agenda, established in 2022 to set a comprehensive European strategy for innovation, is accelerating and strengthening innovation in R&I ecosystems across the EU and addressing the persistent innovation divide across Europe despite various EU and national actions.  Enhanced diffusion of knowledge is among the complementarity actions that can generate innovation potential and strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, thereby improving the daily lives of citizens and offering innovative solutions to the challenges and opportunities currently facing Europe.

As outlined in the Council recommendation on the guiding principles for knowledge valorisation adopted in December 2022, knowledge valorisation aims to generate social and economic value from knowledge by integrating various sectors and transforming data, expertise, and research findings into sustainable products, services, solutions, and evidence-based policies. The Council's recommendation sets out common policy principles and measures for national, regional, and local policymakers to transform R&I results into solutions that benefit society.

The guiding principles are:

  • (i) engaging all actors in R&I ecosystems;
  • (ii) focusing on connections and co-creation between actors; and
  • (iii) emphasising entrepreneurial skills and practices.

Moreover, in line with European Research Area (ERA) action 7, the European Commission has launched a Mutual Learning Exercise (MLE) on Knowledge Valorisation, which started on 24 March 2023 and was financed by the Horizon Europe Policy Support Facility (PSF).

You can find the programme here. Registration is open until 12 May 2024.

The seminar will be held back-to-back with a workshop co-organised with the EESCon Exploring Artificial Intelligence in R&Dfrom 9:30 to 13:00.

Knowledge valorisation is a topic of interest for ERRIN's Science and Education for Society (SEFS) Working Group. The presentations from the most recent SEFS WG meeting on the societal impact of Research and Innovation held on 22 April, can be retrieved here
