Policy
The Policy Working Group works closely with the Management Board and the leaders of the other WGs to position ERRIN on cross-cutting policy issues. The WG follows closely overall research and innovation policy, in particular the Horizon Europe framework programme, from an overarching perspective and ensuring coordination of horizontal programme aspects. The WG also focuses on the preparations to the next framework programme (FP10), implementation of the European Research Area (ERA) as the renewed policy framework and agenda for research and innovation, as well as on the New European Innovation Agenda, especially strengthening ecosystems and the “Regional Innovation Valleys” initiative.

European Partnership Stakeholder Forum 2023
Commission's DG R&I, with the support of ERA-LEARN, is organising the second edition of the Partnership Stakeholder Forum in Brussels. The event will bring together the whole community of European Partnership stakeholders to discuss policy and practical aspects related to European Partnerships.
Monitoring SDGs in EU regions: Filling the data gaps
Local actions and strategies are essential to implementing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Agenda. On 5 December, the final event of the pilot project “REGIONS2030: Monitoring the SDGs in the EU regions - Filling the data gaps” will take place, with 10 European regions presenting a shared system to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals regionally.
S3 Forum
The Smart Specialisation (S3) Forum 2023 is the second in a series of events that the European Commission’s DG REGIO, with the support of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the S3 Community of Practice Secretariat, is organising for S3 stakeholders from across EU regions. This bottom-up region-centric event will take place on 28 November 2023 in Barcelona. Register until 13 November 2023.
Fostering Innovation Ecosystems in Europe: Which Role for Widening?
In the upcoming "Brussels FutureTalks" event on 20 November 2023, experts from EU institutions, practitioners and national stakeholders will discuss their experiences and provide insights and perspectives on the Widening programme under Horizon Europe and the role of innovation ecosystems. ERRIN will take part in a panel on Widening actions as a key driver for Pockets of Excellence.
Policy WG meeting: ERA Hubs: Defining the concept
The upcoming Policy WG meeting will offer a unique chance to gain first insights into work and upcoming opportunities within two European projects tasked with testing and piloting the ERA Hubs concept: COOPERATE and ERA_FABRIC. Aiming to strengthen R&I ecosystems, ERA Hubs are an opportunity to create a framework for both multi-level governance and multi-stakeholder approach. The event will take place in person at the ERRIN premises on 17 November from 10:30-12:00.

The Forward-Looking Survey - European Urban Initiative
The European Urban Initiative (EUI) has launched a forward-looking survey to gather vital insights from urban practitioners and policymakers across Europe. This survey, hosted on Portico, aims to identify key trends, challenges, knowledge gaps and support needs in European sustainable urban development. The survey will be open from 6 June until 12 July.
New EU Preparatory Action on innovation for place-based transformations
A new EU Preparatory Action (PA) on innovation for place-based transformations was publicly announced for the first time by the JRC of the European Commission during the ERRIN S3 Working Group meeting on 25 June. The challenge-oriented PA will offer several opportunities for regional engagement and will be based on the experience of Partnerships for Regional Innovation (PRI), with a call for EoI expected to launch in October 2024.
ERRIN two-pager for European decision-makers
ERRIN is pleased to share a two-pager for the incoming European decision-makers, aiming to present the network and our value to the new MEPs, raising a voice for the importance of place-based R&I in the changing landscape. We encourage all ERRIN members to share the document with their MEPs to introduce ERRIN and the value of place-based R&I.
Over 70 ERRIN member regions announced as Regional Innovation Valleys
On 19 June, the Commission announced the 151 regions identified as Regional Innovation Valleys following the call for EoI and calls for proposals in 2023. 75 successful regions come from ERRIN members. RIVs will aim to strengthen the regional innovation ecosystems, bridge the innovation gap and improve Europe's overall innovation performance. New calls for proposals under Horizon Europe are expected in 2025.
ERRIN two-page input on FP10 for the attention of the Expert Group
As the work towards the next EU Framework Programme for R&I (FP10) continues, ERRIN is pleased to share its two-page input for the attention of the Expert Group on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe. The document is a concise compilation of the reflections on FP10 done at ERRIN so far, highlighting topics of key importance. Work on a series of broader input papers is underway.
ERRIN is looking for a Head of projects - Extended Deadline
In view of the upcoming departure of ERRIN's current Director of projects, Ryan Titley, ERRIN is looking for a replacement to start in September 2024. The new colleague will work closely with the ERRIN Director on strategic planning, and lead the implementation and development of ERRIN's current and future project portfolio. Extended deadline: Applications are open until 26 May at 17.00 CEST.

Yesterday the European Commission announced 75 new top experts who will advise on the five EU Missions through serving on their Boards. ERRIN is thrilled that Françoise Guaspare from Île-de-France Europe, one of the Transport Working Group leaders, will join the Mission Board of the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission.
