Innovation & Investment
The Innovation & Investment Working Group aims to monitor the main initiatives put in place by the European institutions under the priority ‘an economy that works for the people’ and explicitly target SMEs. The Working Group monitors industrial and cluster policy developments and promotes instruments that support innovative financing (e.g., cascade funding financial instruments).

EuroNanoForum 2023
EuroNanoForum 2023 - Nanotechnology and advanced materials for a Sustainable Europe is taking place on 12-13 June 2023 in Lund, Sweden. Sessions will span from materials for green energy, future chips and semiconductors, to graphene and 2D materials, as well as infrastructures, manufacturing, and more.
Regional development in light of research infrastructures – the importance of ESS & MAX IV for local, regional, national and European innovation capacity
On 31 May, Region Skåne is organising a seminar in Brussels with important discussions about regional development in light of large research infrastructures. The event aims to highlight the importance of the research infrastructures for the local and regional development in Skåne, as well as how the infrastructures contribute to national and European competitiveness and innovation capacity.
Online training event for Horizon Europe Cluster 5 applicants
The network of Horizon Europe National Contact Points (NCPs) for Cluster 5 ‘Climate, Energy and Mobility’ – GREENET will organise online training for stakeholders from all types of organisations planning to submit a project application on a topic of the calls opened on May 4, 2023. The online training will take place on 30 May from 13:00-16:30.
Regional Innovation Valleys calls for proposal online info session
On 25 May 2023, EISMEA is organising an online info session about the two Regional Innovation Valleys calls for proposals under the European Innovation Ecosystems part of Horizon Europe and the Interregional Innovation Investments (I3) Instrument, to be launched on 17 May 2023. Insights will be shared about the policy background and the call application process.
Floating Wind Days 2023
Floating Wind Days will take place on 24 and 25 May in Haugesund, Norway. Take a boat trip to see the world’s first floating turbine up close, and of course, meet, mingle and do business with the key people in the industry.
Partners for SMEs: Intermediaries in regional innovation ecosystems
Universities of Applied Sciences Netherlands is hosting an event on 24 May, from 10:00-13:30. In order to achieve an inclusive digital and green transition while ensuring Europe’s competitiveness, partnerships to innovate Europe’s SMEs are key to success. During this event, knowledge institutions will be brought together with public and private stakeholders, to explore how each of us can most effectively extend the EU’s support to SMEs.

The ERRIN Management Board has appointed three co-chairs to the network. The three postholders will work together as a troika to guide the network in a collaborative manner in the period of 2024-2025.
Exploring Synergies between European Partnerships and EU Missions – Mutual Learning Event
ERRIN and the TRAMI project are organising a Mutual Learning Event aiming to explore synergies between European Partnerships and EU Missions. The event will take place on Wednesday 7 February from 9:00 to 12:00 (CET) at the NCBR Brussels Office, Rue Belliard 40, Brussels.
Innovation Fund calls to drive net-zero technologies open until April 2024
With a budget of €4 billion, the Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting innovative projects that contribute to the EU’s green transition goals. The Innovation Fund 2023 calls covering sectors including decarbonisation, hydrogen, cleantech manufacturing, and maritime and energy-intensive industries are open until 9 April 2024, 17:00 (CET).
Expression of interest: Circular Cities and Regions Initiative Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues
The Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI), one of ERRIN's projects, is organising Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues in 2024-2025 to identify Research & Innovation Gaps that need to be bridged to boost the circular economy at the local and regional level. Experts are invited to express their interest in participating in the CCRI Dialogues to share their research and innovation needs and feed into the design of the Horizon Europe 2025-2027 calls.
Regional innovation highlighted in Council conclusions on R&I
On 8 December, the Council of the EU approved conclusions on strengthening the role and impact of research and innovation in policymaking – a priority file for the Spanish Presidency of the Council. A stronger role for local and regional innovation to strengthen competitive R&I is featured in the conclusions as one of the three mutually complementary dimensions.
ERRIN end of year reception - 2023 Highlights
On 7 December, ERRIN celebrated the network’s achievements in 2023. Following an engaging meeting with leaders of our 15 Working Groups, all ERRIN members were invited to a cocktail reception featuring a keynote from Markus Schulte, Head of Cabinet of Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. Scale-up your local / regional project to the European level via the EIC
ERRIN is launching an open call to map research and innovation projects funded with European Structural and Investment Funds in the last couple of years which could potentially receive further funding from the EIC. This Call is following up previous exchanges with the EIC Programme Managers to explore how regions and their stakeholders can further benefit from the EIC.

To start planning Working Group activities for 2022, the Working Group leaders will take part in the annual strategy workshops at the end of November. The 2021 Regional Innovation Scoreboard has been published, revealing that innovation performance has increased for 225 out of 240 regions over the last seven years.

European innovation scoreboard 2021
The 2021 European innovation scoreboard is now available, showing that the bloc's innovation performance continues to improve. Innovation performance across the EU has increased by 12.5% on average since 2014, while the 2021 innovation leader was named as Sweden.
