The European Green Deal (EGD) brings forth a comprehensive set of objectives and targets that are relevant to the use and protection of our oceans. A major challenge is the realisation of these ocean-related objectives. Current governance landscapes are multi-sector, multilevel and complex, and the pathway towards the achievement of the EGD ambitions for the European seas is not straightforward. In this roundtable, we will discuss the role of policy coherence and institutional integration in delivering the EGD, with a focus on offshore wind energy and biodiversity.
The EEA will release a report on 15 May titled "Responding to climate change impacts on human health in Europe: focus on floods, droughts and water quality". The report, produced under the European Climate and Health Observatory, aims to help policymakers understand the effects of floods, droughts, and water quality on human health due to climate change.
With the recent launch of its Project Development Tool (PDT), ERRIN is organising a training session for its members and stakeholders based in the regions to leverage its full potential. The session will take place online on Tuesday 7 May 2024 from 14:00 to 15:00.
On 25 and 26 April, the European Commission is organising Info Days dedicated to the EU Missions 2024 calls for proposals. The event will provide potential applicants with information on the new topics included in the EU Missions work programme 2024 under Horizon Europe. An update on the implementation of each Mission will also be provided.
ERRIN has been actively working on the topic of EU Missions as one of the network's priorities. As we continue preparations towards the next European Framework Programme for R&I, the upcoming Policy Working Group meeting will focus on the role of EU Missions in FP10. The event will take place in person at the ERRIN premises on 23 April from 14:00-16:00.
ERRIN is supporting the REINFORCING project in organising an interactive workshop aimed at exploring the challenges and needs faced by cities and regions regarding citizen engagement within the EU Missions. The project will support organisations financially with specific training, capacity-building sessions, mentoring opportunities and peer learning. The workshop will be organised on 23 April between 11:30-13:00 at ERRIN’s office.

ERRIN is excited to kick off 2024 with the launch of the SOILL-Startup project that will support the implementation of the Horizon Europe ‘A Mission Soil Deal for Europe’. SOILL-Startup will set up and run an effective one-stop-shop to coordinate, support, enlarge and promote the network of 100 Soil Mission Living Labs and Lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils across Europe by 2030.
On 7 December, ERRIN celebrated the network’s achievements in 2023. Following an engaging meeting with leaders of our 15 Working Groups, all ERRIN members were invited to a cocktail reception featuring a keynote from Markus Schulte, Head of Cabinet of Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth. The HuMUS project has launched a cascade funding call aimed at supporting 20 pilot projects in fostering participatory governance methods to improve soil health at regional and local levels in Europe. The total budget for the HuMUS Call for Pilot proposals is €600.000, with a maximum subgrant of €30.000 (lump sum) per Pilot Project. The deadline for proposal submission has been extended until 05 April 2024.
Autumn 2023 marked the start of ERRIN’s targeted reflections on regional dimension in research and innovation in the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework post-2027, relating to the next EU Framework Programme for R&I (FP10) and future cohesion policy. The European Commission launched a call for technical assistance to support communities of stakeholders working with ports, islands and fisheries. Set within the sea basins of the Mission Ocean and Waters - the Mediterranean, Atlantic & Arctic, Danube, and North & Baltic Sea - this technical assistance aims to empower and guide these communities towards impactful and sustainable feasibility studies for their projects to achieve the Mission objectives. The first cycle will close on 24 May 2024.
On 20 March, the Commission published the first report on the state of play of the New European Innovation Agenda, following its launch in July 2022. The document outlines the progress and achievements with regard to the 25 actions under Agenda’s five flagships, including the Regional Innovation Valleys. On the same day, an EU R&I Days debate on the way forward for RIVs was also held.
Interreg Europe's 3rd call for proposals, launched on 20 March, supports interregional cooperation projects addressing common regional development challenges. Organisations can use the ERRIN Project Development tool to express interest and find partners. The call is open until 7 June 2024.
