The objective of the Working Group is to act as a platform to offer early information on priorities and funding opportunities linked to Smart Cities, with a focus on the EU Mission on 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. The WG aims to facilitate sharing of experiences and support matchmaking to develop new partnerships and projects. The WG targets the smart city topic from an integrated and holistic approach, addressing issues such as citizen engagement, data-driven policy and smart governance models, while exploring synergies between the areas linked to smart cities as addressed by the ERRIN WGs on Energy and Climate Change, Transport and ICT.
The Smart Cities WG has taken an active role in shaping the Mission on 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030 - one of the five mission areas under Horizon Europe - and is closely following the implementation of the mission. Urban Mobility Days 2022 will be held on 20-22 September in the city of Brno, Czech Republic. During plenary session 2 on 'TEN-T Urban Nodes', (9:30 AM -10:50 AM | 09/22/2022) Françoise Guaspare, Senior Policy Advisor, Île-de-France Europe and co-leader of the Transport WG will intervene by presenting some key points of our ERRIN Polis opinion on the TEN-T regulation.
As one of the first events in its programme, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU will organise a flagship conference "Synergies in the Research and Innovation Funding in Europe" on 7-8 July 2022 in Prague. The conference shall be held as a physical event, but following web streaming will be available. Pre-registration is obligatory.
ERRIN's Spring Annual General Meeting will be held this year on 23 June at 15:00-17:30 CEST followed by a networking cocktail from 18:00 CEST. In addition to discussing formal issues and offering an opportunity to network, the event will feature debates around the new European Innovation Agenda.
The European Committee of the Regions and the European Commission are organising the first Knowledge Exchange Platform (KEP) event of the year. The workshop will take place on 22 June 2022, in person in Brussels. ERRIN Director Pirita Lindholm will moderate one of the two discussion sessions on "Ongoing or future strategies and initiatives".
The MOSAIC project, in which ERRIN is partner, is organising its first Community of Practice workshop. The event will run from 09:30 - 13:00 CEST on Tuesday 14 June at ERRIN Office in Brussels and will be followed by a networking lunch. Pilot Cities, Replicator Cities and the wider Community of Practice, as well as Brussels-based colleagues, are welcome to attend.

Going towards FP9, several reports - including the Lamy report - underlined the necessity to address the challenge of turning research knowledge into innovation and growth.
This year, the Cities Mission Conference will take place in Valencia, Spain, on 25-26 June. ERRIN will participate in the conference as a partner in the NetZeroCities project, which manages the Cities Mission Platform. As the event is partly organised in collaboration with the European Urban Resilience Forum this year, ERRIN will also be there to promote its two Mission Adaptation projects: RESIST and Pathways2Resilience.

The Cities Mission Platform has opened a call for the Enabling City Transformation Programme. The Enabling City Transformation call invites Mission Cities to propose innovative actions to overcome systemic challenges faced when implementing climate action. This 18-month programme aims to foster large-scale, city-wide transformation, building upon and progressing beyond the Pilot Cities programme. The call is open until 14 October.
The EU-funded project Data Spaces for Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities opened a call in June 2024 to select pilot projects for the deployment of Data Spaces.
Applications are now open to join IN SITU Summer School, “Place-based creative solutions for cultivating caring and sustainable communities" (20-24 September 2024), and the IN SITU Conference "Horizons of Sustainability: The power of creative innovation for transformation of rural and non-urban futures" (25-27 September 2024), both held in the beautiful island of Zlarin, Croatia.
As the work towards the next EU Framework Programme for R&I (FP10) continues, ERRIN is pleased to share its two-page input for the attention of the Expert Group on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe. The document is a concise compilation of the reflections on FP10 done at ERRIN so far, highlighting topics of key importance. Work on a series of broader input papers is underway.
NetZeroCities is launching a Pilot Cities Programme that will help cities to test out locally tailored actions towards a climate transition. The call opens on September 5 and invites applications from all cities that are committing to the objectives of the EU Cities Mission located in EU Member States and Associated Countries.

Driving Urban Transitions to a Sustainable Future (DUT) Partnership is the new programme of JPI Urban Europe, which will be officially launched in October 2022. In view of this upcoming launch, the DUT Partnership website has been published and the opening of the first DUT Call has been announced on 21 September together with two call info days.

A consortium led by the Warsaw University of Technology is looking for partners for a project entitled CITY AS NEW HOPE - Modular and Adaptive Green Solutions for Integrated Urban Recovery in the upcoming LIFE Programme call: LIFE-2022-SAP-CLIMA-CCM Preferred partners are Spanish urban municipalities and an Italian university or a research organisation.
